How Mick Joined Manchester United

Mick was initially brought in to work at Manchester United Academy on the basis of having two sons play for their First Team and Reserves (Michael & Steven) and two other sons who were national/international weight-lifting champions (Mark & Shaun).

During his first season of involvement with the Reds, an injury for Roy Keane proved to be a turning point in Mick's career. With both men keen boxers, they hit it off - so to speak - quickly, and Clegg took charge of the midfielder's weights programme during his rehabilitation. Soon, a number of players were eager to do work with him.

After observing training demonstrations with key First Team players, Manchester United management requested a two hour presentation on how the whole squad’s power, speed and fitness could be improved.

This initiated implementation of one of the earliest advanced strength and conditioning programs in the EPL and directly overlapped a ten year golden period in the club’s success.

The Carling Cup

Mick says....
"I have had the amazing privilege to have been the power development coach at Manchester United Football club from 2000 to 2011. My job entailed training the first team, reserves, youth team, and the schoolboys.

My everyday function involved working with some amazing sporting athletes. Major stars including  Roy Keane, Jaap Stam, David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Christiano Rinaldo, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher have all been trained by myself over the years."

His Strength and Conditioning role meant ensuring optimal physical development of every player on Uniteds books and integrating return to play recovery programs with athlete rehabilitation.

Mick's central coaching responsibility over the years has been the development and rehabilitation of some of the biggest players in the world of football, past and present:-

5 years working with Cristiano Ronaldo
3 years David Beckham
3 years Wayne Rooney
10+ years with Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville

While taking a pivotal role in ensuring that the total fitness levels of all players from First Team right down to school boys, Mick has evolved to meet the high standards demanded for top level English Premier League clubs and players.

In-depth psychological exposure to players combined with first-hand guidance for career dedication and competition confidence.

Continual assessment of a wide range of the latest training technologies and methods. Functional implementation and integration of the best of these to create advanced training systems, inc. a Cognitive-Reactive Training Zone.

A shift to a developmental focus in September of 2010, driving higher standards of home grown players in the Academy to improve transition rates into the Reserves and First Team.

Taking charge of total fitness and development of over 120 youth with the opportunistic aim of drastically increasing the club’s player value to player purchase ratio.

For the past few months Mick has had the unique opportunity to train another Olympic hopeful, the Taekwondo Gold medalist Aaron Cook.  Aaron, already holding several gold medals, left team GBs coaching programme in June to undertake his own training regime. Aaron is a strong contender for the 2012 Olympic Games Taekwondo event and signs are looking good for another gold for the 20 year old Power Rangers fan. In October 2011 at the British International Taekwondo Championships Aaron won another gold medal beating the competition to first place.

As well as using the main gym at his Olympic Sports Gym Complex Mick is also giving Aaron the full advantage of the specialist equipment in the S.P.I. laboratory.

Manchester United coach aids Aaron Cook's Olympic gold hunt

AARON COOK says he's back on course for Olympic taekwondo gold — thanks to the help of Manchester United's pioneering fitness coach.

Cook, 20, quit the British Taekwondo high performance squad in June after a disappointing defense of his World Championship crown in South Korea, where he crashed out in the first round.

Since then he's moved back in with his parents in Dorset and has won four out of his last five competitions including the British Open two weeks ago, where he beat Craig Brown in the -80kg final.

The United fan also takes weekly trips to Mick Clegg's Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton-Under-Lyne, where he trains using state-of-the-art machines designed to improve his hand-eye coordination, agility, speed and strength.

Cook believes it is an approach that could give him the edge for next year's Games. He said: "Mick's got some fantastic equipment that is really helping me improve in the sport in ways I hadn't thought possible."

Tower Of Strength

Warrington Wolves have developed a strong association and relationship with professional strength and conditioning coach Mick Clegg.

The first team squad were recently put through their paces at Mick's Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton as they prepared for the Qualifying Semi-Final and aim to book their place in this year's Grand Final at Old Trafford.

The gym is renowned for assisting a wide range of people from working with professional stars including players from Manchester United to encouraging fitness throughout those in the community.

The players were given use of the weights, the strong man equipment and the high tech neurotracker machine which trains reaction time and peripheral vision.

Chris Baron, Wolves' head of strength and conditioning, said: "The main reason behind the visit was to give the players the opportunity to experience something different as well as a bit of mental stimulation for them. They've been training at Padgate all year and it was good to experience a different gym as well as different training and coaching too as Mick delivered the session. We had different equipment at our disposal adding variety to the session."

Warrington Wolves blown away by Roy Keane before they did the same to Wakefield Trinity Wildcats

WARRINGTON Wolves were inspired by Manchester United and Republic of Ireland football legend Roy Keane going into their big win against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The 40-year-old former Sunderland and Ipswich Town boss, who won seven Premier League titles, one Champions League crown and four FA Cups in his 480 games with United between 1993 and 2005, spent time at the club last week studying the club’s training set-up and methods.

Keane, who was in the North Stand for Wolves’ recent Challenge Cup quarter-final clash with Wigan Warriors, spoke to the squad about his illustrious career, including eight years as United skipper.

Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said the sessions came about as a result of Wolves’ developing association and friendship with United’s strength and conditioning coach, Mick Clegg.

“He’s a sporting icon and we were all blown away by his honesty and the ecapades that he was willing to share with us.

“It was a great insight into the man. He’s a terrific man, I’ve got a lot of time for him and it was a privilege to have someone like him come and talk to us.”

About Mick's Olympic Sports Gym

a multi-sports training center since 1983. Based in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Manchester it has become a central training establishment specializing in Strongman, Weightlifting and Speed Development.

In his youth Mick originally started out in a band, playing a guitar.  One day, after having some promo shots taken, Mick had a shock! "My arms were skinnier than the strings on my guitar!" Mick exclaimed. It took the shock of seeing that photo that he took the biggest turning point of his life.

He went to the gym. After training for three months he had started to fill out, people were noticing the difference. The biggest impact though was he enjoyed it so much he took up a coaching post at that very gym. Weightlifting and boxing became his mainstream.

By the time he was 27, he had become a dedicated fitness fanatic and owned his own gym.

"In my capacity within my own gym I have produced Olympic lifting teams from schoolboys to international level with over 30 boys starting from never having lifted a bar to top level. I ran an Olympic boxing club for 14 years, coached in schools, lectured in colleges in and around Greater Manchester. I even trained the England lacrosse team."

Mick and his work with Cognitive Training & S.P.I.

It was working with Cognitive ideas that formed the basis for the concept behind the Seed of Speed training methodology to attain speed, strength, endurance and flexibility. It was from this that seedofspeed and Sports Performance Innovation were both born. Mick is founder of seedofspeed and director of S.P.I. which focuses on advanced technologies from around the world in the area of elite athletic training.

To further look into the relationship between the brain and athletics, Mick and his eldest son Michael went to America to increase their knowledge of brain use in sport, especially in the area of speed. After analysing baseball, basketball, NLF, they attended some lectures by Dr Joe Dispenza who is a brain specialist as well as having a big interest in quantum physics. It was at this point he and Michael put their minds together and focused the direction of their research as looking for the seed of speed. Once they had found the area where the seeds were planted then they embarked on a journey of stimulating the growth of the seeds to the present study entitled “how to produce a super powered brain for athletic performance”.

It was through this research that Mick is also now member of the scientific advisory board for CogniSens Athletics on cognitive training technology.

THIGHS OF THUNDER

The power generated by Rooney's muscular thighs enabled him to run the length of the field at an average speed of 14mph to meet Nani's pass and score United's second goal during Sunday's 3-1 triumph at Arsenal. The fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, runs 100m at an average of about 23mph. Like former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and current colleague Darren Fletcher, Rooney is benefiting from the gym work he puts in with United's strength and conditioning coach Mick Clegg, who devises individual weight programmes for the players. Rooney will focus on squats, lunges and power snatches with weights to improve the strength and speed in his lower body, similar to the methods used by top sprinters - such as the Jamaican world-record holder - who have disproved the notion that big muscles can slow you down.

Fletcher openly cites the influence of strength and conditioning coach Mick Clegg as a major factor behind his transformation. Gone is the wispy, willowy youngster who shirked the weights; in his place, an unerringly dedicated pro who’s mastered his body. Clegg, a vocal motivator, ushered Fletch onto the right road by showing him a flesh-and-blood blueprint for physical perfection: Cristiano Ronaldo. “I’ve worked with Darren since he was a teenager,” says Clegg. “But he wasn’t kicking on. I told him to look at Ronaldo and the way he was utterly dedicated. He came into the gym every morning and after every training session. If Darren wanted to get the best out of himself, he’d have to match that. So he started on a plan and steadily worked harder and harder, and over 18 to 20 months got it right.

Putting it bluntly, in the immediate aftermath of the break at Stamford Bridge, Rooney said that his mind was not on the World Cup - "we'd just lost the league that day". But in the coming weeks of rehabilitation, he credited Smith, who broke his leg and dislocated his ankle in February, and the United fitness coach Mick Clegg, for helping him to recover from his second broken metatarsal in two years. "While I was injured people might have thought I was just sitting around doing nothing, but I was training, I was doing everything I could to keep myself fit," Rooney said. "A lot of people didn't see that so they might have thought I was doing nothing. Since I came back, I've felt good.
